CUBA: 2 week road trip with a rented car

SALSA, MOJITO, MUSIC, OLD CARS, colonial ARCHITECTURE, white sandy BEACHES and smiling children. We travelled around Cuba long ago, so any detailled information I have from the year 2003 is nowadays probably too old to share. I can only share photos and describe the impressions we made. We rented a car in HAVANNA and drove to PINAR DEL RIO, BAY OF PIGS, CIENFUEGOS, TRINIDAD, CAMAGUEY and SANTIAGO DE CUBA. From Santiago we flew to VARADERO (the plane was an adventure itself) and spent three days enjoying the beach in an AI hotel.

We found the difference between the rest of Cuba and Varadero extreme disturbing, and were almost happy that we didn´t spend more time in Varadero. It´s too bad that some people only come for a 2 weeks holidays in the AI resorts and never see the reality behind those walls. We never stayed in AI hotels, but here this seemed to be the easiest choice. Our rented car got broken almost every second day and so we visited many car repair shops. The countryside was beautiful and music was everywhere. People seemed to be happy with what they had and were always ready to dance and spread the good mood.
